Hail to the Eskimo play a special show at the Rose and Crown (Minnies, Stannington) on Saturday 24th September! 

To celebrate band-member Phil Johnson’s 40th Birthday, the band will be playing two sets with a couple of new songs thrown in. We hope you can make it down to the Arctic Disco to dance the night away and celebrate with Phil and the rest of Hail to the Eskimo.

We offer lots of alternative entertainment for the young and old be it live sport to quiz nights, live bands and discos. SKY SPORTS has just returned in time for the start of the football season and our two over 35 teams are in pre season training, still time to trial if interested.

August Bank Holiday Weekend Friday 26th will see the return of live rock band 3FB covers from Oasis, Kings of Leon, Killers etc. Dont miss out arrive early music from 9pm on.

We have recently had international clairvoyant Joanne Gregory hold two evenings with us which proved to be very popular and hopefully will be returning again soon so watch this space!

The structure of the old Rose & Crown would have indicated that it was built for a private residence but there are no records available to confirm this or to say when the sale of beer first took place. However it was a free house up until June 1918. Up to that date the owners for a considerable number of years were the Wild family and the sold out to Tomlinson’s Anchor Brewery.

During the year 1920 Mr. and Mrs. Irvine Lee took over the tenancy and after Mr. Lee died in 1953, Mrs. Minnie Lee carried on as tenant for a number of years until just before the building was altered. Mrs. Lee could claim a lifetime’s connection with the Rose & Crown as she can remember as a girl standing on a box to wash glasses whilst the Wild’s were tenants.

Whilst she was a licensee she had a wonderful understanding with the customers. One outstanding feature showing this, was that instead of walking backwards and forwards for change from the taproom she always had a jar filled with cash, sometimes up to £4 or £5, and this was left unattended on a table. Not once was there any suspicion of money being taken, a tribute to the customer’s of that day.
